The foliage emerges beet-red in the spring, taking on a greener hue in the summer, and then to bronze tones for the fall. Upright stems of tubular, white flowers appear above the outstanding foliage.

The name penstemon is derived from 'Pente' (5) and 'stemon' referring to the five-stamened flowers.
