When bruised, the foliage smells like freshly mown hay. Often growing in large colonies and forming a carpet, it is identified by its lacy, oval-oblong, thin-textured fronds that change to yellow-green in the fall.

Grows best in a rich, moist to average soil, in partial to full shade. Turns brown quickly if it dries out. Established colonies can spread in dry or rocky soils.
