One of the most distinctive ornamental maples noted for its cinnamon-brown bark which exfoliates in paper-thin curls. A slow-growing species with an upright, oval shape, rich green foliage, and brilliant red fall colour. It is insect resistant and will produce winged fruit.

Adaptable to many soil conditions, however, it grows best in a well-drained, moist soil. It can be grown as a specimen tree or multi-stemmed plant.
